Why Intensive Treatment Works

Bipolar needs more than weekly sessions

Mood disorders require consistent skill-building to create lasting stability.

DBT for Mood Stability

Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills specifically adapted for bipolar: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Mood Monitoring

Daily tracking helps teens recognize patterns and early warning signs. Catch episodes before they escalate.

Psychiatry Coordination

We work closely with your teen's psychiatrist to ensure medication and therapy are working together.

Peer Understanding

Groups with teens who get what mood swings feel like. Less isolation, more "I've been there too."

Level of Care

More support than therapy alone

When weekly sessions aren't enough to build lasting stability.

Common Questions

What parents ask us

Does my teen need a formal bipolar diagnosis?

A diagnosis from a psychiatrist or qualified provider is helpful but not required to start. Many teens come to us during the diagnostic process or with "mood disorder NOS." Our clinical team can help clarify what's going on and ensure appropriate treatment.

How do you coordinate with my teen's psychiatrist?

With your consent, we maintain regular communication with your teen's psychiatrist—sharing mood tracking data, treatment progress, and any concerns. If they don't have a psychiatrist, we can provide referrals to medication providers who specialize in adolescent bipolar disorder.

What if my teen is in a depressive or manic episode right now?

IOP can be appropriate during mild-to-moderate episodes—in fact, the structure can help. If your teen is in an acute crisis (severe mania, psychotic symptoms, or active safety concerns), they may need a higher level of care first. Our admissions team will assess and guide you to the right level.

What DBT skills do you teach?

We focus on the four core DBT modules—Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Mindfulness—adapted specifically for mood disorders. Teens learn to identify triggers, use TIPP skills during intense moments, and build routines that support stability.

Is 8 weeks enough?

Eight weeks is the foundation—enough time to learn and practice core skills. Many teens continue with weekly maintenance therapy after IOP. The intensive 3x/week structure creates momentum that once-a-week therapy can't match, making the transition to maintenance more successful.

Will being in a group with other teens with bipolar help or hurt?

Research shows peer support is powerful for teens with mood disorders. Hearing "me too" from someone who actually understands reduces isolation and shame. Our therapists facilitate groups to keep discussions therapeutic—not just venting sessions—while building genuine connection.
