Signs and Symptoms of Depression in Teenagers
Recognizing depression in teenagers can be challenging. Learn the key emotional and behavioral signs that indicate when a teen needs professional support.
Depression in teens can be difficult to spot. It’s a period of emotional ups and downs, but the signs of depression are more pervasive and persistent than typical teenage moodiness.
Emotional Changes
- Persistent Sadness or Hopelessness: A low mood that doesn’t go away.
- Irritability or Anger: Frequent outbursts, frustration, or feelings of hostility. This is often more prominent than sadness in teens.
- Loss of Interest: No longer enjoying activities they once loved, from sports to video games to hanging out with friends.
- Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt: Harshly criticizing themselves or feeling responsible for things that are not their fault.
- Frequent thoughts of death, dying, or suicide.
Behavioral Changes
- Withdrawal from Friends and Family: Spending more and more time alone.
- Changes in Sleep: Sleeping much more (hypersomnia) or much less (insomnia) than usual.
- Changes in Appetite: Significant weight loss or gain.
- Drop in School Performance: Lower grades, skipping school, or lack of motivation for schoolwork.
- Use of Alcohol or Drugs: Attempting to “self-medicate” their feelings.
- Self-Harm: Such as cutting, burning, or other forms of injury.
When to Take Action
If your teen is experiencing several of these symptoms for more than two weeks, it’s time to seek professional help. Depression is not something teens can simply “snap out of”—it requires proper treatment and support.
If you notice any of these signs, seek help immediately by calling the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or taking your teen to the nearest emergency room.
The Importance of Early Intervention
The earlier depression is identified and treated, the better the outcomes. With proper support, teens can learn to:
- Manage their symptoms effectively
- Develop healthy coping strategies
- Build resilience for future challenges
- Reconnect with activities and people they care about
- Achieve their academic and personal goals
